Jack Dorsey, born November 19, 1976, in St. Louis, Missouri, is an American entrepreneur and software developer best known as co-founder of Twitter and Block (formerly Square). Raised Catholic with an early interest in dispatch software and programming, he dropped out of New York University to pursue tech ventures in Oakland, California.
Early career and Twitter
Dorsey developed web-based dispatching for taxis and couriers in 2000, which inspired his idea for a real-time status-sharing service. In 2006, he teamed with Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass at Odeo to launch Twitter, posting the first tweet (“just setting up my twttr”) on March 21. He served as Twitter’s first CEO (2007–2008), then chairman, returning as CEO from 2015 to 2021 when he resigned, succeeded by Parag Agrawal.
Block (Square) and later ventures
Dorsey co-founded Square in 2009 with Jim McKelvey, creating a mobile payment platform that revolutionized small-business transactions; it went public in 2015 and rebranded to Block in 2021. Post-Twitter, he backed decentralized social projects like Bluesky (joined board 2022, left 2024) and Nostr, donating millions via his #startsmall fund.
